Music Business Facts- with Rodney Holder

Today the wonderful person that I’ve connected with is Music Publicist and PR Strategist Angela Mastrogiacomo from Muddy Paw PR- Check her services out at MuddyPawPR.com

Now Angela is an absolutely wonderful person and I really enjoyed speaking with her. And we had a really awesome chat about the incredibly important topic of music publicity (surprise surprise). And as I often do- I threw in a few tricky and personal questions, and in this interview Angela gave me some awesome and really honest answers. She also provides a fantastic look into the world of what it’s like to be a music publicist, and gives some great advice for any of you people when it comes to using a publicist’s services.

Today I have a great treat for you. My guest today is Chris Gero. Not only is Chris a great and very humble bloke, but he’s also the Vice President of Yamaha Corporation USA. So I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to speak with this guy and be able to share that conversation with you.

Among other things Chris is also the Yamaha Artist Relations Executive and the founder of the Yamaha Entertainment Group. He is a Record Label Executive, Concert Producer, Film Director and Record Producer.

He's a really smart guy, and as I mentioned- very humble! During this interview, Chris gives me some really great insights and tips on how to approach potential sponsors- what to do and more importantly what not to do. We speak about a lot of other really cool stuff too but I really think that the gold in this conversation is Chris’ advice and take-aways about how to play it when you’re looking to get a sponsorship or endorsement.

Chuck Billy is the lead vocalist for the American pioneering thrash metal band Testament. Although Testament's line up has changed over the years, Chuck has remained one of the constant members of the band that formed way back in 1986. That’s 30 years in the music business people- A very impressive feat to still be going and to still remain relevant in the often superficial world that is the music industry.

As you’ll hear in my interview, one of the super important reasons that Chuck, along with his long standing band mate Eric Peterson have been able to continue with Testament, and continue making money, is because they learned about the music business.

The Runaways are one of the most influential bands of the 70’s- certainly the most influential all girl band of any era. And my guest today is the original lead vocalist of that group- the lovely Cherie Currie, and what a story she has to tell. Like I mentioned The Runaways basically rocked the music industry to their core with their attitude fueled performances and sexually explicit lyrics- all being fronted by a 15 year old Cherie Currie. They were wild, and drug fueled, and presented to the world as basically 'jailbait'! If you’ve seen the awesome film titled “The Runaways”, which is partially based on Currie’s brutally honest memoir then you’ll know what I’m talking about. And if you haven’t seen it – go see it!

Cherie is touring Australia in a few weeks so if you’re interested her show dates are available in the show notes at: musicbusinessfacts.com!

I hope you enjoy my conversation with this living rock legend.

My expert guest today is Satchel- lead guitarist for the very talented and incredibly funny American parody glam act Steel Panther.

I’ve got to admit that this is definitely the most politically incorrect episode of Music Business Facts ever, but it was a lot of fun to interview this guy.

Satchel’s real name is Russ Parish and I did inquire if he’d be interested in doing a “serious” interview, but he wasn’t, so when I realised that I’d be speaking with the character “Satchel” I thought I’d have a bit of fun with it and have a bit of a crack at comedy myself. So don’t take this episode of the show too seriously!

Although, there are actually a couple of good music business facts in this interview, most of it is just a bit of fun so I really hope you enjoy it.

Steel Panther are touring Australia next month in June. If you haven’t seen them live before they are an excellent band, kind of a cross between Motley Crue, Skid Row, Van Halen and Rodney Rude- It’s a great show and if you like your 80’s metal performed flawlessly and delivered in a hilarious R rated manner you’ll love Steel Panther!

Matt Urmy is a former touring musician, now turned tech entrepreneur. When Matt was a touring artist he often had trouble organizing his contacts, managing finances and keeping track of gigs while on the road. Sound familiar to anyone?

Anyhow, Matt actually did something about it and created a cool new web based app and company called “Artist Growth”.

Artist Growth is a great web based app that helps musicians and managers streamline the touring process. It’s designed to help you sort your finances, merchandise, royalties and much more, all in one place that’s always available online. And it’s also a great discovery tool where record company A&R reps can also potentially find your stuff as well!

My guest today is a cool guy named Karl Sanders, who is the founding member of the American Ancient Egyptian themed, technical death metal band Nile. I’ve met Karl a number of times now whilst he’s been here in Australia and he is making a full time living as a death metal guitarist. He’s been doing that for many many years, so as usual I thought I’d pick his brain about the music business facts and see what he had to share.
